On Thursday, nominations for the 40th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards were announced by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

As usual, PBS topped the nominations list by a mile, with an even wider margin over the field than last year.

But the big news is how close HBO came to overtaking perennial No. 2 CBS.  HBO racked up 32 nominations to CBS’s 33 — that’s ten more noms than the premium cable network had in 2018.

CNN (15), ABC (13), The New York Times (12), and Univision (10) are the only other nominees in double digits.
